Great River Greening is a rapidly growing nonprofit conservation organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a mission of restoring the state's prairies, forests and waters through community engagement. Since our origins in 1999, Greening has restored more than 7,000 acres of natural habitat across the state, while engaging more than 25,000 volunteers in the process.
Great River Greening has grown significantly in its geographic scope over the last few years, building from its core base in the Twin Cities into the Anoka Sandplain in east-central Minnesota, and the Minnesota River Valley in the southern part of the state. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Technician joins Great River Greening's team of conservation professionals that works collaboratively with conservation partners and local communities to conserve and restore natural resources across Minnesota. S/he will be Great River Greening's first staff person dedicated solely to improving water quality within the Minnesota River basin, and will be based in the Nicollet SWCD office in St. Peter, Minnesota. The Technician will work alongside Nicollet SWCD staff in conducting outreach to landowners (principally farmers) within the Seven Mile Creek watershed, enrolling landowners in appropriate conservation programs (such as CRP, RIM and WRP), and overseeing implementation of a broad suite of associated conservation practices that serve to protect this cold-water trout stream.
SALARY INFORMATION:
Full-time (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and Saturdays. Salary range is $33,000-$36,000, depending upon experience. This position has full benefits, including paid vacation, health, dental, 401k, LTD and life insurance.
The position is currently funded for two years (May 2012 - May 2014), but an extension may be possible contingent upon performance and securing of additional funds.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Coordinate, oversee and implement conservation practices in collaboration with SWCD staff and landowners through a variety of programs such as RIM, CRP and state cost-share - 70 percent.
- Conduct landowner outreach; assess landowner eligibility for participation in various federal/state conservation programs - 10 percent.
- Assist with compiling/writing grant status reports, press releases, and newsletter articles, including use of E-Link - 10 percent.
- Represent Great River Greening, Nicollet SWCD, and the Seven Mile Creek Watershed Partnership at events, meetings and as a member of various committees - 5 percent.
- Provide educational outreach to local, state and federal agencies, local communities, and non-governmental organizations - 5 percent.
QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERENCES:
Minimum Qualifications:- Minimum two-year degree in environmental or natural sciences field coupled with four years of relevant experience.
- Familiarity and experience with state and federal agricultural and watershed conservation programs and practices.
- Solid understanding of watershed management, and regional land use and its effect on water quality and natural resources.
- Experience implementing conservation projects with landowners or other partners, delivering high quality results on time and within budget.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be comfortable and effective in speaking before the public, and to market conservation programs to landowners.
- Demonstrated ability in being self-driven, working independently, and producing results.
- Working knowledge of ARC Map, and Microsoft Office products.
- Good physical conditioning; must be able to carry up to 50 lbs over irregular terrain.
- Strong organization and budgeting skills.
- A valid Minnesota driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:- Bachelor's (B.A. or B.S.) or advanced degree in environmental or natural sciences.
- Direct experience or familiarity with agricultural and/or aquatic riverine systems.
