- Farm Volunteers Needed for Open Arms of Minnesota
Open Arms of Minnesota
Belle Plaine, MN
-
Volunteers are truly the backbone of Open Arms. We rely on more than 1,900 volunteers to cook and prepare meals, make deliveries to clients, and grow and harvest fresh vegetables in our garden. However, I'm writing you specifically about the garden, which we call Open Farms. It provides Open Arms clients with fresh, organic and healthy produce. We need your help with our arm-related volunteer opportunities!
About Open Arms of Minnesota Open Arms prepares and delivers free meals for people living with life-threatening illnesses, including HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, MS, ALS, and more than 60 other serious diseases. Our meals are tailored to meet the needs of clients based on their illness, the side effects of their treatments, and their appetites. In 2012, Open Arms volunteers will help us cook and deliver 460,000 meals.
Volunteer opportunities at Open Farms Open Farms is located at Prairie Oaks Institute in Belle Plaine, MN (about 45 minutes south of Minneapolis). We grow more than 25 different types of vegetable crops on about 3 acres of land. This year, we plan to harvest 30,000 pounds of fresh and organic vegetables, all of which will be transported to our kitchen and turned into delicious, nutritious meals for our clients. To ensure success with this project, we need 450 volunteers. Many different types of volunteer opportunities are available, including:
- Early season planting in the hoop house
- Preparing soil and seed beds
- Planting, weeding, and watering the crops
- Harvesting and washing the produce
- Transporting the produce to Open Arms
Volunteering at the farm is a great way to get outside, get some exercise, have fun, and help those in need. People have the option to volunteer individually or in groups. To learn more about Open Arms and the farm, visit www.openarmsmn.org.
