With over 1,650 members, 3,500 active volunteers, 15 board members, and 17 staff, Friends of the Mississippi River is a leading citizen organization working engage area residents to protect and enhance the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Our three-fold approach to our mission embraces the goals of improving water quality, protecting riverfront land, and cultivating river corridor stewardship by bringing people to the river through a variety of educational, recreational, and volunteer events. The organizationęs annual budget for 2012 is approximately $1.2 million.

Position Description
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Annual Giving & Major Gifts Manager will support the organizationęs fundraising efforts by working with the Director of Development and other staff to coordinate individual and annual giving; supporting and administering capital campaign activities; working with the Executive Director and other staff to cultivate and solicit major and capital campaign gifts; and assisting the Director of Development with a variety of prospect research, event, and fundraising-related tasks.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bacheloręs degree, or three years directly related responsible experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum two years experience with membership and annual giving activities.
  • Experience with major gift and capital campaign fundraising preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships, and strong personal solicitation skills.
  • Advanced word-processing, spreadsheet, database and Internet search skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of current trends in fundraising, philanthropy and the non-profit sector.
  • High level of thoroughness and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Commitment to basic fundraising ethics and strong privacy principles.
  • Commitment to and passion for the mission of Friends of the Mississippi River.


  • Responsibilities
  • Working with the Director of Development to thoroughly understand and meet the organizationęs fundraising priorities and goals.
  • Maintaining and updating detailed profiles on $500 individual donors.
  • Assisting with the identification, development and execution of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for current and prospective major donors.
  • Coordinating, supporting and administering capital campaign related activities.
  • Organizing and maintaining membership and individual donor files.
  • Coordinating and stewarding the organizationęs monthly donors.
  • Coordinating membership acquisition mailings.
  • Individual gift processing, pledge tracking and list management.
  • Generating reports for tracking and forecasting.
  • Participating in the design and implementation of a new organizational database.
  • Cultivation and fundraising event support.
  • May include some volunteer and intern supervision.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required.


  • The development staff at Friends of the Mississippi River are occasionally called upon to perform development functions outside their primary job responsibilities, and duties that in large development shops are assigned to other staff cannot always be delegated. We seek a candidate who is flexible, motivated, and comfortable working in a challenging and exciting environment.

    Salary
    $33,000 - $36,000 commensurate with experience. Generous paid time off, partial health and dental benefits, paid parking.
