Volunteer Manager
Lake Superior Zoo

Supervisor: Director of Education (DOE)
Hourly Position: Full-Time, Tuesday-Saturday

Principal Function:
Under general direction of the DOE, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of the zoo's volunteer programs including recruiting, training and scheduling. This includes cooperating with other zoo staff and departments to assess volunteer needs and provide volunteer coordination for education programs, special events, grounds keeping, fundraising and other projects. The Volunteer Manager helps to enhance zoo visitor experience by maintaining well-trained and appropriately supervised education volunteers and volunteer groups. This position generally works Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Principal Duties:
1. Manage education department volunteers and volunteer programs
a. Recruit, interview, train, and schedule volunteers for the interpretive program, docent program, and barn attendant program
b. Provide mentoring and performance evaluation for volunteers
c. Train docent animal handlers and ensure handling protocols and training materials are updated and followed
d. Organize and oversee quarterly docent meetings and educational opportunities
e. Create a volunteer recognition program
f. Organize interpretive resources and create new interpretive carts
g. Assist Zoo Crew Coordinator with teen volunteer program in summer

2. Provide volunteer management support to other staff and departments
a. Assist other staff with recruitment, selection, and orientation of volunteers for events, grounds keeping, cleaning, group projects, fundraising campaigns and other zoo initiatives
b. Serve on special events committees and provide volunteer management at special events

3. Perform other duties as assigned
a. Handle and present education animals during programs including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates, and small hoof stock
b. Deliver public and youth programming as needed, on-site and by driving the Zoomobile for outreach programs
c. Ensure maintenance and accuracy of volunteer calendars, records, databases, and reports of volunteer hours
d. Write newsletter articles that pertain to volunteer activities
e. Work with the education team to identify and address departmental goals
f. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education, Experience & License Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Education or related field
  • Experience as an informal or formal science educator preferred
  • Experience in volunteer or personnel management preferred
  • Background in biological sciences and animal handling strongly desired
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a legal driver's license and liability insurance


  • Competency and Knowledge Requirements:
  • Working knowledge of animals, conservation, and environmental interpretation
  • Experience designing and conducting educational programs
  • Comfortable working with all species, including snakes and spiders
  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and holidays
