Children's Education Substitute Instructor

Temporary Appointment not to exceed 67 days/calendar year

Job Title: Instructor as needed Plantmobile and On-site Fieldtrips

Required Qualifications: BS in Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Education, Elementary Education or another field to include teaching experience in a classroom or informal setting. Strong organizational skills.

Salary Range: $13.50-$18.00

Report: Youth Education Manager

Responsibilities:
The substitute instructor is responsible for delivering high quality hands-on plant science fieldtrip experiences for school groups. To achieve this, instructors must manage program supplies and materials, manage and support teaching volunteers, and must exhibit strong teaching and presentation skills.

Schedule: To be determined based on need. Most opportunities will have advanced notice but on-call availability would be a bonus.

Substitute Instructor specific responsibilities include:
  • Greet and organize teaching volunteers when they arrive to teach
  • Make sure all needed supplies are on hand.
  • Meet the bus, orient teachers and students to their visit. Give a positive first impression of their fieldtrip visit to the Arboretum.
  • Learn all portions of the program and teach stations as needed.
  • Work with volunteers to have programs set up and taken down daily.
  • Work with School Services Manager to run volunteer trainings, learn program content, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Continuously gather ideas and information for program improvement.
  • Teach with passion, energy, clarity, and flexibility, with the goal of connecting each student to the program content.
