Workshop: Minnesota Dragonflies and Damselflies

A new workshop is being offered this summer all about Minnesota Dragonflies. Dragonflies and Damselflies can be found anywhere water is near, are easy to catch, and don't sting or bite (very hard). From historical dragon lore to scientific identification and citizen science reporting, in-depth study of the order Odonata can benefit all classrooms.

Presented by Ami Thompson Consulting LLC in association with the Minnesota Odonata Survey Project (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). This four-hour workshop that examines dragonflies in a new way by exposing their education connections to science, art, English, social studies, fitness and more.

The workshop includes:
  • Intro to dragonfly and damselfly natural history
  • Outdoor hands-on field time capturing and examining as many Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) as we can catch
  • Techniques for dragonfly and damselfly ID
  • Tips for raising nymphs
  • Citizen science connections
  • Activities with handouts and technology connections
  • 4 CEUs for attending


  • Workshops are being hosted all around the state all summer long. Many are being combined with Digital Photography Bridge to Nature Workshops (MN DNR) for a total of 8 CEUs for no additional Charge.

    July 26th Gooseberry Falls State Park Dragon and Digital Bridge 8-4:30
    July 27th EPA building Duluth near Lester Park Dragon and Digital Bridge 8-4:30
    August 24th Deep Portage in Hackensack Digital Bridge and Dragon Fly 8-4:30

    Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Workshop cost: $65/educator.
