Ornamental grasses can add beauty and interest to gardens and other landscaped areas with little upkeep and few inputs. They can also be used to reduce soil erosion and in prairie re-establishment. This bulletin reports the findings of a winter hardiness study of 165 ornamental grasses at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Lists ornamental grasses found to be suitable for USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 4a, those found to be marginally hardy and those not recommended as perennials. Has 20 color photos and 26 illustrations of various grasses, a section on Miscanthus, a color map of plant hardiness zones in the United States and Canada and a list of nurseries that sell ornamental grasses. Has lists of grasses for different landscape needs, for prairie re-establishment and for fall and winter interest. Discusses alternative lawns. For gardeners, landscape designers, homeowners, nursery and garden center personnel, horticulture professionals, teachers and students of horticulture and landscape design.
