Contact Information / Display Complete Database Record Indoor Air Quality in Schools | Staff Resource type: Web Site - Program - Resource Person According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), IAQ is important for health, economic, and legal reasons. Indoor air pollutants can cause discomfort, and reduce school attendance and productivity. Moreover, it can "cause or contribute to short- and long-term health problems, including asthma, respiratory tract infection and disease, allergic reactions, headaches, nasal congestion, eye and skin irritations, coughing, sneezing, fatigue, dizziness and nausea"1. Poor indoor air quality can hasten building deterioration. One study of an elementary school showed that if $8,140 had been spent over 22 years on preventive maintenance, $1.5 million in repairs could have been avoided1. In addition, poor indoor air quality can contribute to the closing of schools, create liability problems, and strain relationships among parents, teachers, and the school administration. The Minnesota 1997 Omnibus Education Act requires public school districts to adopt a plan to monitor and improve indoor air quality. The Department of Children, Families and Learning (DCFL) has adopted USEPA's Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools program as the basis for establishing the criteria for an effective IAQ Management Plan.

Contact Information / Display Complete Database Record PLT's High School Curriculum: Exploring Environmental Issues: Focus on Forests | Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - Project Learning Tree (PLT) Resource type: Curriculum Nine activities in PLT's Exploring Environmental Issues: Focus on Forests teach students about forest health, watersheds, climate change, who owns America's forests, and more. The 176-page guide integrates teaching about forests into a multitude of subject areas using hands-on classroom studies and outdoor field investigations. High school educators and junior college professors can obtain a copy of this curriculum by attending a PLT professional development workshop in their area. PLT's 50-state network trains more than 30,000 PreK-12 educators every year through 1,500 workshops held across the country. The Exploring Environmental Issues: Focus on Forests module is designed to foster student understanding of- and appreciation for- the forested lands throughout North America. The module's activities provide an opportunity for hands-on study of forest resources while addressing concepts in biology, civics, ecology, economics, forest management, and other subject areas. Through the activities found within this module, students examine ecological systems of a forest; analyze interdependencies within a forest ecosystem; and explore factors, such as fire, that shape the development of forests. In addition, they develop critical thinking skills and discover the importance of scientific analysis when making decisions about forest issues. This resource was created, in part, with support from the USDA Forest Service and the Idaho Forest Products Group. Get the Materials To obtain this resource, educators must attend a Project Learning Tree professional development workshop. Contact your PLT State Coordinator to find and register for a workshop near you. Note: Project Learning Tree (PLT) in Minnesota has been cut back because the Division of Forestry experienced some major budget reductions. PLT will exist, but minimally, through June 30, 2013. The Department of Natural Resources is evaluating its role in how we handle forestry education.
