In Asphalt to Ecosystems: Design Ideas for Schoolyard Transformation (New Village Press), author Sharon Danks broadens our notion of what a well-designed schoolyard should be, taking readers on a journey from traditional, ordinary grassy fields and asphalt, to explore what's being created in the growing movement toward "green" schoolgrounds in the United States and around the world. This book documents exciting examples from more than 150 schools in 11 countries, illustrating a vast range of possibilities in outdoor classrooms for learning and play. More than 500 vivid color photographs showcase some of the world's most innovative green schoolyards including: edible gardens with fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, honeybees, and outdoor cooking facilities; wildlife habitats with prairie grasses and ponds, or forest and desert ecosystems; schoolyard watershed models, rainwater catchment systems, and waste-water treatment wetlands; renewable energy systems that power landscape features or the whole school; waste-as-a-resource projects that give new life to old materials in beautiful ways; K-12 curriculum connections for a wide range of disciplines from science and math to art and social studies; creative play opportunities that diversify schoolground recreational options and encourage children to run, hop, skip, jump, balance, slide, and twirl, as well as explore the natural world first hand. The book grounds these examples in a practical framework that illustrates simple landscape design choices all schools can use to make their schoolyards more comfortable, enjoyable, and sustainble. And it describes a participatory design process that schools can use to engage their communities in transforming their own asphalt into ecosystems. Web Site: http://www.raptor.cvm.umn.edu Childhood and Nature: Design Principles for Educators | David Sobel Resource type: Book/Magazine Public discussions of global climate change and other threats to the planet are making children more aware of environmental issues. As increasing numbers of kids come to school wishing to take action, educators want to know how to teach in a way that fosters a love of nature and an understanding of the complexity and seriousness of these issues. In Childhood and Nature, noted educator David Sobel makes the case that meaningful connections with the natural world don't begin in the rainforest or arctic, but in our own backyards and communities. Based on his observations of recurrent play themes around the world, Sobel articulates seven design principles that can guide teachers in structuring learning experiences for children. Place-based education projects that make effective use of the principles are detailed throughout the book. And while engaged in these projects, students learn language arts, math, science, social studies, as well as essential problem-solving and social skills through involvement with nature and their communities. The pressures of test preparation, standards, and curriculum frameworks often reduce the study of nature and the environment to a set of facts and general concepts. However, as Childhood and Nature demonstrates, linking curriculum with an engagement in the real world not only provides students with the thinking skills needed for whatever test comes their way, but also helps them grow into responsible citizens and stewards of the earth. Downloadable in pdf format. The goal of Composting in the Classroom is to provide high school science teachers with the background needed to engage students in research focusing on composting. There are a number of reasons why composting research lends itself well to the classroom setting. First, composting of yard wastes and food scraps presents a partial solution to the solid waste crisis; thus, composting research addresses practical problems of concern to students and their communities. Second, nearly all the equipment and materials are inexpensive and readily available. With proper maintenance to prevent odor and insect problems, composting systems can be set up in the classroom, as well as outdoors in the school yard. Finally, many experiments can be conducted within two weeks or less, although long-term composting research projects are also possible. Composting in the Classroom begins with an overview of composting science (Chapter 1). Chapters 2 and 3 provide instructions on how to build and add the right mix of ingredients to compost systems. Chapter 4 outlines how to monitor the composting process, and Chapter 5 describes how to measure the attributes of the finished compost. Once students have made and tested their compost, they might want to use it in plant growth experiments (Chapter 6). Several important points about conducting research are included in Chapter 6 as well as in Chapter 7. This last chapter is a discussion of how to help students design meaningful research projects focusing on composting.

Web Site: http://www.pca.state.mn.us/kids/coloring.html Environmental Education Materials: Guidelines for Excellence | National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education Resource type: Book/Magazine - Pamphlet - Guide Environmental Education Materials: Guidelines for Excellence is a set of recommendations for developing and selecting environmental education materials. These guidelines aim to help developers of activity guides, lesson plans, and other instructional materials produce high quality products and to provide educators with a tool to evaluate the wide array of available environmental education materials. Environmental Education Materials: Guidelines for Excellence points out six key characteristics of high quality environmental education materials. For each of these characteristics, there are listed some guidelines for environmental education materials to follow. Finally, each guideline in accompanied by several indicators listed under the heading "What to Look For." These indicators suggest ways of gauging whether the materials being evaluated or developed follow the guidelines. The Guidelines for Excellence offer a way of judging the relative merit of different materials, a standard to aim for in developing new materials, and a set of ideas about what well-rounded environmental education curriculum might look like. In an effort to assure that these Guidelines for Excellence do reflect a widely shared understanding of environmental education, they were developed by a "writing team" comprised of environmental education professionals from a variety of backgrounds and organizational affiliations. This team took on the challenge of turning ideas about quality into usable guidelines. In addition, drafts of these guidelines were circulated widely to over 1,000 practitioners and scholars in the field (e.g., teachers, educational administrators, environmental scientists, and curriculum developers), and their comments were incorporated into successive revisions of the document. This book represents another in a series of documents published by NAAEE as part of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education. ISBN 1-884008-41-0

This book is intended for use in a one- or two-semester course in environmental science, human ecology, or environmental studies at the college or advanced placement high school level. The goal of this book is to provide an up-to-date, introductory global view of essential themes in environmental science along with emphasis on details and case studies that will help students process and retain the general principles. Because most students who will use this book are freshman or sophomore non-science majors, the authors make the text readable and accessible without technical jargon or a presumption of prior science background. At the same time, enough data and depth are presented to make this book suitable for many upper-division classes and a valuable resource for students who will keep it in their personal libraries after their formal studies are completed. About the Authors William Cunningham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota where he taught for 36 years in the Departments of Botany and Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the Conservation Biology Program, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, and the McArthur Program in Global Change. Mary Ann Cunningham teaches geography and geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental studies at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. From the preface of the book: "Community-based social marketing draws heavily on research in social psychology which indicates that initiatives to promote behavior change are often most effective when they are carried out at the community level and involve direct contact with people. The emergence of community-based social marketing over the last several years can be traced to a growing understanding that programs which rely heavily or exclusively on media advertising can be effective in creating public awareness and understanding of issues related to sustainability, but are limited in their ability to foster behavior change. This guide will provide you with the information you need to incorporate community-based social marketing techniques into the programs you design. After reading this online book, you will have a new set of tools at your disposal which you can use to create effective community programs to foster sustainable behavior." McKenzie-Mohr's comprehensive web site above also offers a wide variety of other resources related to community-based social marketing, including large searchable databases of articles, case studies, strategies, and discussion forums. It's worth a visit for those interested in working to foster sustainable behaviors, such as those involved in conservation, energy efficiency, transportation, waste reduction, and water efficiency! Contact Information / Display Complete Database Record Natural Wonders: A guide to early childhood for environmental educators | Minnesota Early Childhood Environmental Education Consortium with funding from the Minnesota Office of Environmental Ass Resource type: Guide - Book/Magazine Available Free Online: http://www.seek.state.mn.us/classrm_e.cfm Environmental education organizations and other informal education venues have recently recognized the need to provide specialized programming for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. Likewise, record numbers of parents, daycare providers and early childhood educators have begun seeking out nature centers, zoos and museums as places to help their not-yet school-aged children learn, grow and develop an appreciation of and love for nature. On the surface, it's a match made in heaven. However, unlike teachers in the formal school system who specialize in certain age groups, informal educators have to be ready and able to provide dynamic, interesting, relevant and appropriate programs for all agesfrom preschool to senior citizensoften at a moment's notice. While this kind of versatility is necessary, it can lead to one-size-fits-all programming that leaves preschoolers behind. But the more we learn about the brain and how experience affects growth and development, the more we see the need to specialize our approach to educating young children. Thanks to educators and researchers like Rousseau, Piaget, Froebel and Montessori, we've known for decades that children are not just smaller versions of adults, nor are preschoolers smaller versions of school-aged children. From years of research and practice, we know that very young childreninfants, toddlers and preschoolersare fundamentally different than older children and need to be taught in fundamentally different ways. Since the late 1980s, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has led the way in defining what those ways are. This information has been available to early childhood educators for years, but has not been translated for use in environmental educational settingsuntil now. This guide was written especially for naturalists and environmental educators interested in learning more about how and why young children think and act and how they can use this information to design developmentally appropriate programs and activities. However, it is not intended to be a recipe book. You won't find a prescribed method for teaching about maple syruping or pond study. Although we do provide guidelines on what makes a program or activity developmentally appropriate, we recognize that everyone's situation is different and allow for as much flexibility as possible. How to use this guide The sections of this guide become progressively more practical and specificfrom understanding the basics of how young children think, to evaluating the developmental appropriateness of programs, and everything in between. Each section contains specific topics that explain in greater detail the elements of child development and what it means to facilitate young children's learning. At the end of each topic, a chart is provided detailing information and examples of most appropriate, somewhat appropriate or least appropriate practices associated with those topics. We have provided this chart as a gauge educators can use to identify where their teaching methods currently are on the developmentally appropriate continuum and what they can change about their methods to make them more developmentally appropriate. No one is developmentally appropriate 100 percent of the time. But if you challenge yourself to keep progressing along the continuum, you'll find it becomes easier and more rewarding for you and the children. Practicing developmentally appropriate education is a constant and evolving process. Even veteran early childhood educators must evaluate their practices on a regular basis and adapt them to changing situations and children. The best way to evaluate your programs for developmental appropriateness is by being an active learner yourself: experiment, explore, seek questions and answers, test theories and invent new ways of approaching learning. And don't forget to have fun!

Web Site: http://www.mntap.umn.edu Newcomers and the Environment - English as a Second Language EE Textbook | Multi-Cultural Educational Services Resource type: Curriculum - Book/Magazine - Booklet An ESL environmental education textbook is now available for free to use in your classes or tutoring sessions. What's unique about this textbook? Several things are unique. In this book we have profiled the lives of immigrants who work in the field of environmental education and protection. We answer a number of questions about each person. Why did they come to the United States? How did they chose their profession? What information do they want to pass on to other newcomers? These immigrants have come to America and successfully made a new life for themselves, as our students hope to do. They serve as an inspiration, both personally and professionally, to all who use this textbook. Second, from promoting recycling to using hazardous household chemicals safely, from reducing indoor air pollution to responsible hunting and fishing, from using outdoor recreational areas in Minnesota to protecting those areas for future generations, it will help students to understand how to live an environmentally friendly life in Minnesota. How to protect their families and the earth from environmental pollution is covered. The environmental education in this book is not available from other ESL materials. Finally, a multi-lingual glossary is included in the textbook which will help students learn the new environmental vocabulary. All students will benefit from the English definitions, and glossary words are also translated into Bosnian, Hmong, Russian, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese. How will these textbooks benefit my students? Students respond positively to materials that are tailored for their use. As newcomers to this country, most want to do the right thing, whether it's recycling properly, following hunting and fishing regulations, or keeping their home healthy. However, it's difficult for them to understand materials that are designed for the general public. Because of their limited English skills, students are not able to pick up the phone and easily get their questions answered. This book provides information that they want and need, and also provides links to agencies and other immigrants that students can contact to get additional information. Will these books appeal to both students and instructors? Absolutely! Instructors will find these textbooks easy to use, and the material written at a level appropriate for teaching ESL. They contain classroom tested ESL exercises which encourage students to use English and learn the rules of language. Reviewing the content of each lesson will give students practical information about how to live in the US and be a friend of the environment. Instructors will find the stories interesting and inspiring. Students appreciate real representatives of their community used as role models. The stories about real people keep them interested in the environmental issues discussed, and the exercises help them improve their English skills. Should they be used in a classroom setting or can tutors use them? Whether you are working with a class, or tutoring one-to-one, these textbooks will work well for you. In fact, anyone teaching ESL or environmental education can use these materials. The goal is to get this important environmental information to newcomers in a format that they can understand. Which ESL students can use "Newcomers and the Environment"? The Intermediate Level book is written for students scoring 200 to 210 on the CASAS, or reading at the 2nd or 3rd grade level. The Advanced Level book is written for students scoring 211 and above on the CASAS, or reading at the 4th grade level or higher. Both textbooks were written for adult ESL programs, but are also suitable for younger students. What topics are covered? Following is the "Table of Contents": Chapter 1 - Kou Xiong, Composting and reducing waste Chapter 2 - Stefanie Pruegel, Recycling Chapter 3 - Girma Yismaw, Preventing water pollution Chapter 4 - Laura Au-Yeung, Improving indoor air quality Chapter 5 - Zahra Niccu Tafarrodi, Preventing health problems from secondhand smoke Chapter 6 - Nigatu Tadesse, Farming and the safe use of chemicals Chapter 7 - Vuthy Pril, Fishing and hunting regulations Chapter 8 - Phoukham (Pooh) Vongkhamdy, Conserving natural resources Chapter 9 - Khoi Nguyen, Using state parks Chapter 10 - Minnesota Fishing Why are the textbooks free? The Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance (MOEA) is committed to funding projects that provide environmental information to groups that are difficult to reach. Immigrants and refugees qualify as a population that cannot easily access this important information. Therefore, through it's education grant program the MOEA has supported the creation and publication of an ESL textbook which conveys this information. The grant also supports the cost of shipping the textbooks to sites that can use the books, for as long as grant funds are available. In return, they want to know that these books will be used with ESL students in K-12 or adult programs, or with others who will benefit from this material. How many textbooks can I order? Order enough so that every student in your class, and all students being worked with one-on-one, will have their own book. You are encouraged to order enough to use for the remainder of this school year, and all of next school year. The books can be used with everyone who will benefit from learning English and environmental education. How soon will I receive the books? You can expect to receive delivery approximately two weeks from the time the order is received. Who is the author? Charles LaRue has been working as an ESL instructor for over 20 years. More than 10,000 copies of his previous ESL textbook, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," were used by ESL programs around the state of Minnesota. He wrote and classroom tested "Newcomers and the Environment."

Web Site: http://www.recycleminnesota.org Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, a multi-language Textbook/Workbook | Charles LaRue Resource type: Curriculum - Book/Magazine There are three editions of this english-as-a-second-language (ESL) environmental education textbook/workbook. Each of these three textbooks/workbooks is translated into six languages. They are: Edition A: Hmong, Korean, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Chinese Edition B: Spanish, Russian, Bosnian, Somali, Farsi, Arabic Edition C (a combination of the most used languages from Editions A and B): Spanish, Bosnian, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, Hmong These three textbooks/workbooks were written with two complementary goals in mind. 1. Create a textbook which both teachers and tutors could use to teach immigrants how to speak, read and write English. With this in mind, the book was set up so that each chapter includes between 3 and 5 ESL exercises. This gives students lots of opportunity to practice both written and spoken English . 2. Communicate information about reducing, reusing and recycling to immigrants with limited English skills, so that they would be more willing and able to participate in local recycling and waste reduction programs. For reasons of clarity we have used over 100 different photographs to illustrate vocabulary words where appropriate, and translated key vocabulary words into 12 different languages. We have written a Tutor Guide to explain how to use the ESL exercises effectively, and to help you get the most from "Reduce Reuse Recycle" as an ESL textbook. For your convenience, we have also included an answer key at the back of the guide. We encourage you to write additional exercises based on the level of competency of your students. We would rather you used the book and changed the exercises, than to pass on the use of the book because it is either above or below the level of your students. There is so much data contained in the text that is helpful and necessary for newcomers to learn. The report discusses why EE is critical to our daily lives by helping to protect human health, advance quality education, and promote sustainable development. To address the many challenges facing the EE field, the report makes specific recommendations for state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and others.
Contact Information / Display Complete Database Record Restoration in the Barrens | Joe Riederer Resource type: Book/Magazine Orphaned at the age of thirteen, Corey Nelson is sent to live in rural Central Wisconsin. Corey's foster parents, Ben and Ellen Raine, introduce him to "The Barrens," a large wildlife area near their farmhouse. The Barrens quickly becomes Corey's refuge whenever things grow difficult. This vast area of prairie grass and scrub oak serves as a link to his late father, a botany professor at the University of Wisconsin. Fitting in at school is difficult for Corey, and a poorly timed kiss doesn't help matters. It's not cool to know more about native plants than sports, but being cool is the least of his troubles. Coming to grips with the death of his parents, uncovering Ben and Ellen's painful past, and dealing with a science teacher with an attitude, are only a few of the problems that await him. This novel, which weaves grassland ecology around the struggles of a middle school student, can be a starting point for family and classroom explorations of the native landscapes that are just outside our door. Joe Riederer has been teaching middle school science in Central Wisconsin for seventeen years and has been working with prairie projects for almost as long.

As a small-scale response to global issues around access to food and land, urban school gardens promote practical knowledge of farming as well as help renew cultural ideals of shared space and mutual support for the organic, built environment. Through a comprehensive history of school garden practice rooted in Eastern industrial cities, to case studies from four Pacific Rim regions, this book examines the practice and culture of the urban school garden as a central symbol for environmental learning. As poetically described by students, teachers, and community members in both historical and contemporary gardens, the story of the urban school garden inspires a new narrative in connecting learners to the land. Contact Information / Display Complete Database Record The Life, Legacy, and Writings of Rachel Carson | Linda Lear Resource type: Web Site - Book/Magazine Rachel Carson, writer, scientist, and ecologist, grew up simply in the rural river town of Springdale, Pennsylvania. Her mother bequeathed to her a life-long love of nature and the living world that Rachel expressed first as a writer and later as a student of marine biology. Rachel Carson wrote four books. The fifth, The Sense of Wonder was published posthumously. All of Carson's books are still in print. You local library will have copies, and so will many independent bookstores and used book stores. Under the Sea-Wind New York, Oxford University Press (1941) ISBN-10: 0140253807 Under the Sea-Wind is Carson's first book and her personal favorite. Under the Sea-Wind takes you beneath the waves with the same kind of intimacy and wonder that made the documentaries Winged Migration and March of the Penguins such masterpieces of nature-immersion. It is the book that first established Carson as perhaps our most prescient and influential observer of the natural world. The Sea Around Us New York, Oxford University Press (1951) ISBN-10: 0195069978 The Sea Around Us is based on geographical evidence and is a study of the processes that formed the earth, the moon, and the oceans. The Sea Around Us is one of the most remarkably successful books ever written about the natural world. Rachel Carson's rare ability to combine scientific insight with moving, poetic prose catapulted her book to first place on The New York Times best-seller list, where it enjoyed wide attention for thirty-one consecutive weeks. The Edge of the Sea Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company (1955) ISBN-10: 0395924960 The Edge of the Sea is a practical guide to identifying the inhabitants of the sea and the marshes, tide pools, and shallows that border it - a world which mirrors the "spectacle of life in all its varied manifestations as it has appeared, evolved, died out." Silent Spring Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company (2002) ISBN-10: 0618249060 Silent Spring, released in 1962, offered the first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson's book focused on the poisons from insecticides, weed killers, and other common products as well as the use of sprays in agriculture, a practice that led to dangerous chemicals to the food source. Carson argued that those chemicals were more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death. Presented with thorough documentation, the book opened more than a few eyes about the dangers of the modern world and stands today as a landmark work. The Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson, photographs by Charles Pratt New York, Harper & Row (posthumous, 1965) ISBN-10: 006757520X Not long before she died in 1964, the noted environmental writer Rachel Carson wrote an essay for Woman's Home Companion magazine called "Helping Your Child to Wonder." In that essay--reprinted here, with photographs of natural subjects by Nick Kelsh--Carson urged parents to take their children to wild places in order to introduce them to the astonishing variety of life that exists all around us: to study birds, listen to the winds, and observe the stars. Too much of the child's subsequent education, she warns, will be devoted to dimming that "clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring" with which children are born; it is the parent's task to be an adult guide who can in turn rediscover the "excitement and mystery of the world we live in." Carson's words are timely, and this beautifully illustrated edition makes a fine gift for new and prospective mothers and fathers. For more information, please visit http://www.rachelcarson.org/

This book was written for parents and educators as a guide for helping children gain a richer and deeper understanding of the world around them through their favorite stories. It is a must-have resource for any parent or educator who wants to help children think about interconnections in our world. Each chapter focuses on a favorite children's picture book--and reveals the systems principle inherent in the story, general points for discussion, illustrations of key concepts, and questions to spark conversation for both younger and older readers. "When a Butterfly Sneezes" is a first of a kind book on this subject and at this level. It offers parents, teachers and teacher educator's a practical means for introducing systems to young minds.
